Here are some tips to follow while filling up at the petrol station if you want a smoother and longer ride with the petrol you buy…
While filling up, build some rapport with your regular pump attendant if you can. Then ask whether the petrol you buy is filtered and if the station changes their pump filters regularly. If you can’t get an outright yes, perhaps it’s time to find another petrol station.
For most petrol stations in Singapore, you’ll find that their petrol is filtered and the filters are changed somewhat regularly. As you cross over to Malaysia, unfiltered petrol and diluted petrol may be a concern. Wherever you are, it’s advisable to find a petrol station (or a few of them) you trust and stick to it.
Why is it important to filter the petrol before pumping into your car? Because sediment in petrol can clog fuel filters and injectors, causing poor performance and much avoidable repairs.
Also, if you happen to see a tanker filling the tanks at the petrol station, come back another day or go to the next station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment that’s already settled at the bottom of the tank.
Finally, take note of your odometer reading before you pull out of the petrol station. This can help you observe which brand of petrol gives you the best ride and the furthest distance per litre of fuel.
