(source http://www.carinsurances.co.uk)

“I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way”

“A truck backed through my windshield into my wife’s face”

“A pedestrian hit me and went under my car”

“In an attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.”

“I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home. As I reached an intersection a hedge sprang up obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car.”
“An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished.”

“I thought my window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it.”

“The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.”

“I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.”

“As I approached an intersection a sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before.”

“I told the police that I was not injured, but on removing my hat found that I had a fractured skull.”

“I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.”

“The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.”

“The telephone pole was approaching. I was attempting to swerve out of the way when I struck the front end.”

“The gentleman behind me struck me on the backside. He then went to rest in a bush with just his rear end showing. ”

“I had been learning to drive with power steering. I turned the wheel to what I thought was enough and found myself in a different direction going the opposite way.”

“When I saw I could not avoid a collision I stepped on the gas and crashed into the other car.”

“The accident happened when the right front door of a car came round the corner without giving a signal.”

“No one was to blame for the accident but it would never have happened if the other driver had been alert.”

“I was unable to stop in time and my car crashed into the other vehicle. The driver and passengers then left immediately for a vacation with injuries.”

“The pedestrian ran for the pavement, but I got him.”

“I saw her look at me twice. She appeared to be making slow progress when we met on impact.”

“The accident occurred when I was attempting to bring my car out of a skid by steering it into the other vehicle.”

These car insurance jokes are actual statements from real claims:
(source http://www.carinsurances.co.uk)

“The car in front hit the pedestrian but he got up so I hit him again.”

“I started to slow down but the traffic was more stationary than I thought.”

“I started to turn and it was at this point I noticed a camel and an elephant tethered at the verge. This distraction caused me to lose concentration and hit a bollard.”

“I saw a slow moving, sad faced old gentleman as he bounced off the roof of my car.”

“Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.”

“I was going at about 70 or 80 mph when my girlfriend on the pillion reached over and grabbed my testicles so I lost control.”

“A car drove away at speed catching our client who went up in the air and his head went through the windscreen and then rolled off at the traffic lights a good few feet away. The car then sped off and miraculously our client remained conscious and managed to cross the road.”

“I am responsible for the accident as I was miles away at the time.”

“I pulled into a lay-by with smoke coming from under the bonnet. I realised the car was on fire so took my dog and smothered it with a blanket.”

“I had one eye on a parked car, another on approaching lorries, and another on the woman behind”.

“On the M6 I moved from the centre lane to the fast lane but the other car didn’t give way.”

“On approach to the traffic lights the car in front suddenly broke.”

“Three men approached me from the minibus. I thought they were coming to apologise. Two of the men grabbed hold of me by my arms and the first slapped me several times across the face. I kneed the man in the groin but didn’t connect properly so I kicked him in the shin.”

“I didn’t think the speed limit applied after midnight”

“I was on my way to see an unconscious patient who had convulsions and was blocked by a tanker.”

“Mr. X is in hospital and says I can use his car and take his wife while he is there. What shall I do about it?”

“No witnesses would admit having seen the mishap until after it happened.”

“I knew the dog was possessive about the car but I would not have asked her to drive it if I had thought there was any risk.”

“While proceeding through ‘Monkey Jungle’, the vehicle was enveloped by small fat brown grinning monkeys. Number three fat brown monkey (with buck teeth) proceeded to swing in an anticlockwise direction on the radio aerial. Repeated requests to desist were ignored. Approximately 2 minutes and 43 seconds later, small fat brown monkey disappeared in ‘Monkey Jungle’ clutching radio aerial.”

“First car stopped suddenly, second car hit first car and a haggis ran into the rear of second car.”

“Windscreen broken. Cause unknown. Probably voodoo.”

“I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment.”

“The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention.”

“I was on my way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way causing me to have an accident.”

“To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front I struck the pedestrian.”

“My car was legally parked as it backed into the other vehicle.”

“I was thrown from the car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows.”

A customer collided with a cow. The questions and answers on the claim form were:
Q – What warning was given by you?
A – Horn
Q – What warning was given by the other party?
A – Moo
Q: Could either driver have done anything to avoid the accident?
A: Travelled by bus?

Before we go into how to get rid of those tailgaters, let’s look at why it’s dangerous to tailgate. This is a mini-lesson in case some who tailgated you are also reading this. =)

1. Following too closely results in almost all of those multi-vehicle collisions on the highway;
2. Tailgating-related accidents are not minor in terms of injuries and fatalities;
3. Following too closely restricts your vision. Your reaction will be slower if something happens ahead;
4. Yes…if you’re closer than the “two-second” rule suggests, you’re too close…oh, that means you’re tailgating!

Those tailgaters are gone? …whew! Let’s get on to the real stuff.

Tip #1: Add their following distance to yours. (Now the 2-second rule becomes the 4-second rule.) That means you can gradually stop in case anything happens in front of you. Most of the time, the tailgater will simply get pissed off and overtake you or move to another lane.

Tip #2: Slow down below the normal traffic speed. Again, these guys will simply get impatient and overtake you or switch lane. Just that now it becomes easier for them to do so since you’re slightly slower than the usual flow of traffic.

While you may feel intimidated or even angry that you’re being tailgated, tapping your brakes to “send a signal” or slamming your brakes doesn’t solve the problem. In fact you may even become a victim of road rage. Simply follow the 2 points above and keep your cool. At least you can laugh at those tailgaters while they’re fuming because of something as trivial as slow-moving traffic.

Spark plugs are now timed with on-board computers. This has eliminated the need for regular tune-ups…but you still need to change your spark plugs regularly. Most manufacturers recommend changing spark plugs every 48,000 or 64,000 km to ensure good fuel mileage and engine performance.

You’re in luck if your car can be fitted with long-life plugs (double platinum plugs) that can last for 160,000 km. Otherwise, it’s recommended to make the switch after 48,000 km. Spark plugs aren’t expensive. But the extra pick up can give you the satisfaction you’re deprived of while firing off with old, dirty spark plugs.

Defensive driving is something that every driver swears they do. But when you hit the road, you observe a different truth. Drivers often commit these 5 mistakes without knowing it or even feeling guilty:

1. Speeding.

This is obvious. We always have a reason to speed. Yet speeding cuts down our reaction time. (Normal reaction time is between .75 second and 1.5 seconds, on average.) At 110 km/h, your car will move at least 35 meters before you have a chance to hit the brakes. We’re often over-confident that we can react to anything. This is not true.

A good driver drives at a speed matching traffic conditions as closely as possible without speeding. If traffic is moving at a higher speed than the limits, keep to the slow side of the traffic. Going any faster doesn’t really save you time and you’re burning more fuel as well.

2. Not Paying Attention

Most collisions involve inattention. Inattention can involve daydreaming, distractions, sleepiness, fatigue, talking, etc. It is true that most collisions happen within a short distance from home or the office. This is because as we drive in the all-too-familiar environment, we tend to let our guards down.

3. Running the Red Light

There are two types of red light runners — the daydreamer (a distracted driver) and the impatient driver. In the city, impatient driving is a common sight and we tend to hit the accelerator when we see the amber light… instead of waiting an average of just 45 seconds for the traffic light to turn green! Be reminded that collisions at intersections are pretty fatal.

4. Not Looking Far Enough

Many drivers only focus on a short stretch of road ahead – not good enough. You should be looking about 15-20 seconds ahead or as far as you can. This gives you ample time to observe what’s happening ahead so you can avoid most potential hazards. Also, don’t concentrate on any particular spot in your field of view for more than a second. This tires your eyes and promotes “road hypnosis”.

5. Drive Unpredictably

Driving predictably is part of planning ahead and paying attention. You should signal early and get yourself into a position early so that others have plenty of time and space to respond and adjust. While on the highway, filter toward your exit early so you don’t have to cut multiple lanes at the very last minute.

The above points seem like nagging, but it’s something which we’re so used to committing. Just for the next 7 days (a week), will you be able to catch yourself doing at least one of these “little” dangerous moves?

Air Filter, as with other filters (like oil and fuel filter) needs to be changed regularly. This is important to preserve your engine’s performance.

In this post, we’ll look at different types of air filters and how often you should change them.

Types of Air Filter

Paper filters – Porous paper is pleated and lined along the air intake (openings) of the filter. As air passes through, dirt is trapped in the pores of the paper. These type of filters are efficient, cost-effective and easy to service.

Foam filters – Oil-wetted polyurethane foam is used to trap particles in the air. These tend to be more efficient filters than paper filters but can cause airflow restriction quickly.

Cotton – Layers of oiled cotton gauze is used as air filter. Seldom used in automobiles.

Oil Bath – The airflow is made to change direction abruptly in the filter as it approaches a reservoir of oil. Air changes direction easily, but not the dirt and particles. So these go straight into the pool of oil while cleaner air passes through. Alternatively the air stream can be made to aerate through a bath of oil.

How Often Should You Change Your Air Filter?

These little air “cleaners” must be changed regularly in order to prevent airflow restriction into the engine. If airflow is restricted, inefficient combustion results and engine power is reduced.

Check your air filter every other month and replace it when clogged. Or replace it when you tune-up your engine. You can also extend the life of your air filter by blowing it clean with compressed air regularly.

Engine oil helps prevent metal surfaces in your engine from grinding together due to friction. It also holds all the dirt generated by fuel combustion and friction in suspension…and it keeps all moving parts coated in oil. Engine oil also prevents oxidation at high temperatures by limiting exposure to oxygen. Therefore using good (or suitable) engine oil will help maintain the condition of your car engine.

To buy suitable engine oil for your car, let’s first understand a little basic about engine oil…

Types of Engine Oil

There are 3 different types of engine oil – Mineral Oil, Semi-Synthetic Oil and Synthetic Oil.

Mineral oil is based from distillation of crude oil while pure synthetic oil is derived from the re-construction of polymers in a lab. Pure synthetic oil is used exclusively for heavily loaded high performance engines and the cost of manufacturing these are way beyond the budget of consumers. Semi-synthetic is a blend of mineral oil and synthetic oil.

The synthetic engine oils that we use (like Mobil 1) are actually derived from a mineral oil refraction process. The product of this process is stable synthetic oil that’s less likely to react with other compounds. Thus synthetic oils are able to lubricate without the shortcomings of mineral oil.

Viscosity Ratings

Your car’s user manual will indicate the range of engine oil you should use. And you would have seen some numbers like “10W-30” But what do the numbers mean?

The number to the left of the letter “W”, meaning winter, is the viscosity of the oil at a low temperature while the number to the right of letter “W” refers to the viscosity of oil at a high temperature. Without going into too much detail, this is known as multi-viscosity oil.

The multi-viscosity behavior is achieved by mixing some viscosity modifier additive into the oil. As the oil warms up, the modifier produces a thickening effect.

So how on earth do I know which viscosity number to buy?

Alright…you got me…let me explain.

In cooler climate regions (with perpetual winter), use low viscosity oil like 5W-30. In temperate regions (like where the rest of world lives), use 10W-40 oils. And in hot regions (like those who live near the equator), buy 15W-50 engine oil. Of course this is just a guide to give you a clearer picture of what these numbers mean. Always follow the recommendation of your car’s user manual.

Engine Oil Brands

Here’s a list of engine oil brands that you can choose from…some of the brands are well known while several others are unheard of:

Caltex
Carlube
Castrol
Conoco
Delphi
Duckhams
ELF
ESSO
FK Massimo
Fuchs
Greddy
Idemitsu
KIC
Liqui Moly
Mobil
Motul
Mugen
OWS
Pennzoil
Prestone
Redline
REV 1
Shell
Shogun
Singapore Petroleum Company
Texas
Toho
Torco
Total
TRD
Unil Opal
United Oil
XREV

The best bet is to buy from the major brands because these companies are more obligated to ensure a minimum standard and to implement good quality control in the production of their products. And most workshops carry the major brands…therefore if you really have to visit another workshop for maintenance, they’ll have a brand that you’re already comfortable using.

Changing Your Engine Oil

Most car manufacturers will recommend drivers to change their engine oil every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers. This is the easiest way for car manufacturers to communicate how often their cars need an oil change…but…contrary to popular belief, oil degradation depends on a variety of factors unrelated to mileage. Therefore to make things simple, if you happen to observe that your engine oil is dark and black, it’s time to change it.

The most convenient way to change your engine oil is to get your mechanic to change them during your car servicing appointments.
Yet if you have to change the engine oil yourself, the easiest way is to get yourself a Pela Pump so that you can avoid all the mess and inconvenience related to oil handling. And it saves you much time and frustration if you’re changing the engine oil yourself for the first time.

Notes:

If you’ve been using mineral oil in your engine for a long time (like years), don’t switch to synthetic oil immediately. It’s safer to transit by using semi-synthetic first. This is because synthetic engine oil can dislodge the deposits from mineral oils and leave them floating around your engine.

Do not hang anything heavy on your car key (or key chain) and do not hang a dozen other keys on it. The weight (combined with bouncing while you drive), can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition. This leads to ignition switch failure over time.

Drive with only the ignition key in your ignition or purchase a key chain that allows you to separate your car key from the others. This will add years of service to your ignition switch. If your ignition key “sticks” when you try to start your engine, your ignition switch may be on its way to failure.

Therefore lighten up your car key & key chain before further wear and tear sets into your ignition switch.

A good car mat should fully cover the area it is protecting and not just part of it. Standard car mats on retailer racks are often bad fitting. Therefore it’s best to tailor a set of car mats that have a much better fit and will not slide about easily.

Although tailored car mats are more expensive, they’re generally harder wearing than the general types…meaning they last longer. Thus over your vehicle lifespan, tailored car mats are often more economical.

When choosing a car mat, make sure both colour and material blends into the existing upholstery. Also make sure that the rubber is thick enough and it has a durable dirt-trapping surface (just like those 3M car mats). Many tailored car mats are designed to trap and hold dirt, and you can clean these mats easily by brushing, washing or vacuuming the dirt off.

A good car mat will last you years if you clean them regularly. If dirt is allowed to build up, they’ll grind holes gradually in your mats…especially at areas near the pedals where your heels rest.
